Maidenhead Festival to launch SoundLab music event in Nicholsons Centre

Budding melody-makers of all ages and abilities are invited to unleash their inner musician at SoundLab, the first in a programme of community arts events organised for 2025 by Maidenhead Festival.

Last year the festival team announced the end of the annual two-day event in Kidwells Park, replacing it with a new focus on smaller but more frequent community events to strengthen the festival’s connection with local venues, businesses, and artists.

The new programme kicks-off in the May half-term with the free Maidenhead Festival SoundLab.

Running in the Nicholsons Centre from May 27-29 in partnership with Dawkes Music, Berkshire Music Trust, and Pianoz, it will allow budding musicians of all ages the chance to try out musical instruments from trumpets and pianos to clarinets, saxophones and ukuleles.

Festival chairman Lisa Hunter said: “Whether you’re a complete beginner or just curious, come and get hands-on experience, learn how these instruments work, and find out how you can take your musical journey further through local lessons and support.

“And it’s not just for kids — adults are welcome too. It’s never too late to find your musical spark.”

While each day will offer the chance to try out different musical instruments, additional highlights include a fun, hands-on ukulele workshop for beginners led by Tabitha Beavan of Power of Uke on the morning of May 28, and lunchtime music sessions designed especially to introduce the joy of music to babies and toddlers.

In addition, to ensure SoundLab is accessible to all, Berkshire Music Trustis offering a unique experience with the Cosmo Switch, a tactile, light-up device that connects to musical games on an iPad.

It is perfect for children and adults with additional needs, as it supports motor skills, cognitive development, communication and musical exploration through fun and play.

Lisa added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Dawkes Music, Berkshire Music Trust, and Pianoz for this exciting new project — they will be bringing their expertise, instruments, and enthusiasm to help you discover the joy of music.

“SoundLab offers a fantastic opportunity to encourage children and adults to explore music and develop new skills through connecting with amazing local music education providers.

“Whether you dream of playing the trumpet, tinkling the piano keys, or strumming a ukulele, the Maidenhead Festival SoundLab is the perfect place to begin your musical adventure.”

Sam Gregory from Dawkes Music added: “Our team will be there with staff from Yamaha to show any youngsters how to make their first few notes on a woodwind or brass instrument.

“We’ll have saxes, clarinets, flutes, and trumpets for people to try. We’re excited to work together with the Maidenhead Festival to help create, inspire, and support the next generation of musicians here in Berkshire.”

Full details of all sessions, which are free, can be found on the Maidenhead Festival website and while you can just turn up on the day, organisers advise signing up in advance for sessions at www.maidenheadfestival.org.uk
