Maidenhead United ‘finding more consistency’ after beating Oldham Athletic – Photo 1 of 1
Ryan Peters says Maidenhead United are finally starting to show the consistency they’ve been craving all season after securing a 1-0 win away at play-off chasers Oldham Athletic while registering their third clean sheet on the bounce.
Shawn McCoulsky scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half at Boundary Park, outmuscling his marker before slotting home in the 66th minute, and although the Magpies defence came under pressure from the Latics late in the game, they held out for a victory that lifts them four points clear of the relegation zone.
With home matches to come against Yeovil Town on Saturday and second placed York City on Tuesday evening, the Magpies will be looking to inch themselves further clear of the bottom four in the coming weeks.
The Magpies’ form has been steadily improving since the turn of the year. They comfortably defeated Wealdstone and AFC Fylde at York Road before edging out Southend United 1-0 two weeks ago, drawing 0-0 at Hartlepool United on Saturday before last night’s impressive away win over Oldham – arguably their best result of the season.
“We’re all buzzing. I think we’ve been very inconsistent all season, dropped our levels far too often,” said Peters, speaking to Maidenhead United club media.
“This latest run of results has been what we’ve wanted all season. We seem to be finally finding a bit more consistency and form.
“We’ve been bolstered by having some of the boys who’ve been out for a long time. Your Kane Ferdinand’s your Alan Massey’s, Remy (Clerima) is also coming back and we’ve had JJ (Joshua Johnson) come in as well. When you look at our squad depth, we have it now and our performances of late have been really good.”
This was a big win for United, watched by more than five thousand supporters inside Boundary Park, however, it was the 25 who travelled up from Maidenhead who were the loudest in those crucial final minutes to get the visitors over the line.
“We had some travelling fans who were immense in the last few minutes when Oldham were coming with a little more force,” added Peters.
“They helped us out. But we’re happy at this moment in time.
“The teams that are going for play-offs, we normally perform quite well at. We enjoy coming to these grounds. After the result against Hartlepool, we wanted to back that up with another one. Oldham are a good side, but there are quite a few sides going for the play-offs. We’ve managed this game really well and Shawn has come up with a great goal.
“It’s easy to say deserved. We deserved something. But when you look back at the game, we probably could have been a bit more ruthless defensively in terms of not giving away as many chances.
“But the luck is with us at this moment in time, but I don’t want to take anything away from the players because they’ve been brilliant.”
The Magpies have had the rub of the green in the past few matches – something they often feel goes against them in these matches against the league’s bigger sides – and they crucially also have some momentum which they’ll be looking to capitalise on in the final months of the season.
And for the first time in many months, the team is now starting to look up the table – at the sides they could potentially catch.
“You’d like to hope so (turned a corner),” he said. “There’s four points between ourselves and the bottom four. We want to be as far away from there as possible.
“We’ve got two home games coming up and you’d like to think we have the emphasis now to hopefully push on and get a few more points. We need to. We’ll take every game as it comes. Who knows what the boys are going to be like when they get back. they’ve put in some shifts.
“But with the squad that we’ve got now we can take a player out and bring another player in.
We’ve been looking at that dreaded line for far too many games. This is a chance for us to push up. The difference between ourselves and two or three teams above us is really close. If we can put together a couple of wins, we could maybe start to look at 14th place where we finished last season.”
