Make in India: Plan afoot to list key transmission gear

New Delhi: The government is working on identifying critical power transmission equipment such as those related to high-voltage direct current (HVDC) lines that can be locally manufactured and is technically and commercially viable. It will hold key stakeholder discussions for indigenising the identified equipment through various initiatives, including technology acquisition, people aware of the development said.

Deliberations are likely to be held with industry associations and public sector undertakings such as Power Grid Corporation of India and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd to identify the critical equipment.

The power ministry had earlier said there was a need to explore a production-linked incentive scheme for transmission equipment or some other policy measure to boost local supply chain.

“We are working on identifying equipment. Normally, technologies are brought by companies that do the work in the segment,” a government official said.

The announcement made in the FY26 budget for clean tech manufacturing is likely to strengthen the supply chain and raise domestic value addition for critical power sector equipment, including high-voltage transmission equipment, one of the persons said.

The ministry will then identify the type and amount of support required to establish the manufacturing base in India, including financial, administrative and diplomatic support, the person said.The government will also identify labs and academic institutions for conducting research and development and developing policies to support research.Power transmission lines and substations are all set to expand with the increase in generation capacities and integration of renewable energy in high-capacity states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka as well others that are planning to have more renewable energy like Bihar.

In transmission equipment manufacturing, more companies should be encouraged to set up units, which is important to meet not just domestic requirements but also look at export, the official quoted above said.
