Malawi expands trade horizons for farmers
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a bid to boost the country’s agricultural sector, Trade and Industry Minister Vitumbiko Mumba has revealed that Malawi is taking concrete steps to help farmers secure better returns from their produce.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Mumba highlighted the recent signing of a Mutual Recognition Agreement on Conformity Assessment with Zambia, which aims to ease trade between the two neighboring countries.
This landmark agreement allows regulatory bodies in both countries to recognize each other’s approvals, making it easier for goods such as maize, groundnuts, beans, rice, and soybeans to reach the market.
Mumba emphasized that this move will undoubtedly benefit local farmers by expanding their market reach and increasing their potential earnings.
Furthermore, Mumba disclosed that Malawi has signed an agreement with the Republic of China to export macadamia nuts, opening up new opportunities for local producers.
He also revealed that talks are underway for a similar trade arrangement with Zimbabwe, which will strengthen regional cooperation and further enhance the country’s agricultural exports.
The Minister’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring that farmers receive the best possible value for their hard work.
With these new trade agreements in place, Malawi’s farmers can look forward to improved market access and increased economic benefits.
As the country continues to navigate the complexities of regional and international trade, the Ministry of Trade and Industry remains focused on creating an enabling environment for farmers to thrive. The recent agreements with Zambia and the Republic of China are a testament to the government’s efforts to diversify the economy and promote agricultural growth.
In the words of Minister Mumba, “Our aim is to make sure farmers get the best possible value for their hard work.” With these developments, it is clear that Malawi is taking significant strides towards achieving this goal and securing a brighter future for its farmers.
