Malawi secures U$$250.8 million World Bank grant for electricity expansion

DODOMA-(MaraviPost)-Malawi has achieved a major milestone under President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership by securing a U$$250.8 million grant from the World Bank.

The funding, part of the Ascent Malawi Project, aims to increase electricity access from 25.9% to 70% by 2030, bringing lasting benefits to millions of Malawians.

At the signing ceremony in Tanzania, World Bank Managing Director Anna Bjerde praised Malawi for doubling electricity access in just four years, from 12% to 25%.

This progress reflects President Chakwera’s strong commitment to improving energy access in the country.

President Chakwera shared personal memories of growing up in a village without electricity, which motivated his drive to ensure all Malawians have reliable power.

“This project fulfills a promise to bring electricity to everyone, especially youth and women whose lives and businesses will transform,” he said.

The government’s success in expanding electricity access has gained global recognition.

This funding will improve daily life and support economic growth by powering businesses, creating jobs, and boosting productivity in homes and rural areas.

With reliable energy, barbershops, small businesses, and farms are already thriving.

As electricity access grows to 70%, industries like agriculture and manufacturing will expand, creating opportunities for young people and lifting Malawi toward a brighter future.
