Maldives needs 900,000 more tourists in 4 months to reach 2025 target – Hotelier Maldives

The Maldives has set a target of attracting 2.3 million tourists in 2025, but eight months into the year arrivals stand at 1.4 million, leaving 900,000 more needed in the remaining four months.

According to official statistics, an average of 6,600 tourists currently arrive daily. Visit Maldives Chairman Abdulla Ghiyas Riyaz told local newspaper Dhauru on Tuesday that this figure would need to grow in double digits to meet the target.

“Record arrivals will be required in the next four months. Growth of at least 13 per cent is needed to reach the goal,” he said.

Projections indicate that if the current average continues, arrivals would reach 2.2 million by year-end. Tourist arrivals have increased by 7.6 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Visit Maldives is working to boost visitor numbers by increasing airline connectivity and lowering ticket costs. Airlines including Air France and Virgin Atlantic have agreed to expand flights to the Maldives. Ghiyas said securing additional flights and better ticket pricing was essential to converting promotional campaigns into bookings.

India, once the leading source market, has fallen to sixth place, contributing 82,907 visitors so far this year, or 5.7 per cent of arrivals. Visit Maldives has launched a campaign to attract 200,000 Indian tourists this year, but Ghiyas said this would require a significant increase in the final quarter, particularly during the Diwali holiday season.

“India is expected to improve in the fourth quarter, and discussions are underway to introduce flights from more Indian cities,” he said.
