The Republic of Moldova became a member of the United Nations (UN) in 1992, shortly after the proclamation of independence from the Soviet Union (August 27, 1991). The Security Council resolution recommending Moldova’s admission to the United Nations was unanimously adopted by the General Assembly on March 2. UN membership gave Moldova official international recognition and was an important step in establishing diplomatic relations with other countries.
By joining the UN, Moldova sought international support to cope with internal and external challenges, in particular the conflict in the Transnistrian region, which escalated in 1992. Thus, on September 4, 1991, a week after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, President Mircea Snegur sent a letter on behalf of UN Secretary General Peres de Cuellar requesting Moldova’s acceptance as a member of the UN.
The invitation of the Moldovan delegation to the 46th session of the UN General Assembly meant the approval of Moldova’s application, which was to be formalized at the plenary session. The delegation was composed of Moldovan President Mircea Snegur, Foreign Minister Nicolae Tau and his deputy – Ion Botnaru.
Thus, on March 2, 1992, the General Assembly voted unanimously, the Security Council Resolution, with the recommendation to admit the Republic of Moldova to the UN. Mircea Snegur made a speech from the UN rostrum on the Republic of Moldova and its place in the international architecture.
As a universal forum for debating global issues, the Republic of Moldova attaches particular importance to the role of the UN in promoting democracy and human rights, maintaining international peace and security, economic and social development, respect for the principles of international law and the rule of law.
Immediately after Moldova’s accession to the UN family, several UN agencies, funds and programs opened offices in the country, with the consent of the Moldovan Government, to support activities promoting democracy, good governance, prosperity, human rights, and the consolidation of a modern and European rule of law. Currently, over 20 specialized agencies, funds and programmes have project offices.
The work of the UN in Moldova is carried out in accordance with the UN-Republic of Moldova Partnership Framework for Sustainable Development 2018-2022, signed on 16 May 2017 by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, the UN Resident Coordinator and representatives of UN system organizations in the Republic of Moldova.
The United Nations was founded after World War II in 1945 and brings together 193 states to address and find solutions to global problems within a unique international framework of dialogue and cooperation. The main organs of the UN are: General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the International Court of Justice.
