Marcos bound for India, first PH state visit in nearly 20 years
MANILA, Philippines — In his first foreign trip since delivering the State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is headed to India, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) announced on Thursday, July 31.
This marks the first state visit of a Philippine president to India since former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s trip in 2007.
According to Malacañang, Marcos was invited by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The president is scheduled to travel to New Delhi on August 4 before proceeding to Bangalore.
He will meet with Modi on August 5 for bilateral talks, according to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
During his visit, Marcos will also meet with Indian President Droupadi Murmu, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and various business leaders.
The PCO said Marcos will also meet with the Filipino community in India. He will remain in the country until August 8.
The Philippines and India marked 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2024, with ties established in 1949.
Bilateral trade between the two countries reached around $3.54 billion in 2023–2024.
The Embassy of India said that as of 2024, India’s exports to the Philippines were valued at $350 million, with Philippine exports to India at the same amount.
Under Marcos’ administration, the Philippines also acquired several sets of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India. The deal was signed in early 2022, with three batches ordered.
The first batch was delivered in 2024.
