Maret’s DJ Hill overcomes obstacles

WASHINGTON (7News) — DJ Hill was on his way to a budding football career for the Maret Frogs. As a sophomore, Hill had a season to remember at wide receiver, earning him 2023 All-State honors as well as a spot on the 2023 All-Met first team.

Then, disaster struck at the beginning of his junior season.

“I tore my ACL my junior year, very first game this season,” Hill told 7News.

The knee injury ended his season and marked the beginning of a lengthy recovery process. “It’s a nine-month, 10-month process. Very long, but it kind of went by fast. Everything felt good, I was doing the right things and I came back better than ever,” said Hill.

Through it all, Hill focused not only on the physical recovery, but the mental as well, saying, “You got to keep your mental strong. Everything’s from a mental aspect; it’s physical, but it’s mainly mental. You think about it too much, it’s gonna mess you up in the head. So, you’ve got to keep your mental strong.”

The 5’8″ 150 lb. receiver completes his rehab process and is healthy to kick off his senior season for the Frogs. However, Hill is hit with another obstacle in the season opener. “I got hurt first game this season,” Hill said.

“I was playing on defense, [and] my knee buckled. A receiver pushed me and I fell on the floor,” describes Hill.

This time, the injury was not as severe, but the setback did cause Hill to miss games for Maret. He stayed on the sideline, cheering on his teammates.

Hill said he drew inspiration from his family to overcome his obstacles, noting that his parents kept him going and helped him push past adversity.

Hill’s abilities have not only earned him local accolades, but he’s also gained the attention of several college football coaches and programs. Hill told 7News that he has been offered by several Division One programs, including Maryland, Virginia Tech and Boston College.

Hill is a 3.3 GPA student who favors math classes and this is how he described his playing style:

I’m a fast, shifty slot receiver, get up and get past my defender. I’m a playmaker, create plays for my team and score touchdowns, of course.

Upon his return to the field, Hill had a message for everyone watching Maret games: “Watch out for #1.”
