Mars can wait: GMA pushes for R&D focus on climate change, poverty, instead of rockets

By Billy Begas

Former President and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo emphasized the need to focus research and development on addressing current world problems rather than on things like rockets to Mars.

Arroyo made the statement during the welcome dinner of the 2025 Jeju Forum, where she also called for innovation that promotes peace, reduces inequality, and benefits all nations, especially the disadvantaged.

She emphasized the importance of policy and technology working together to address global challenges like climate change, pandemics, and poverty.

Arroyo also highlighted ASEAN’s success in fostering regional peace and encouraged global cooperation through open dialogue and inclusive solutions.

“Rather than rockets to Mars, nuclear weapons, and weight-loss pills, R&D should devise solutions for disaster risk reduction, food security, and healthcare in poor nations,” Arroyo said.

She also warned against the misuse of Artificial Intelligence and digital media, urging responsible innovation to prevent conflict and promote understanding.

The Jeju Forum is an annual gathering focused on peace and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific.
