Maruti Suzuki approves third plant in Haryana; to produce 2.5 lakh more cars a year

In a move to boost its production capacity, Maruti Suzuki’s Board approved the establishment of a third plant at Haryana’s Kharkhoda. The new facility will add up to 2.5 lakh vehicles per year to the company’s output.

The Kharkhoda plant produces 2.5 lakh cars a year currently, and with a second plant, which is under construction, Maruti would manufacture 2.5 lakh more units annually. Now, with the addition of this third plant, India’s largest car maker expects its total capacity at Kharkhoda to reach 7.5 lakh vehicles per year by 2029, it said in an exchange filing on Wednesday.

According to Maruti Suzuki, the investment required for this capacity addition is pegged at Rs 7,410 crore.

In 2024, Maruti Suzuki achieved a significant milestone by producing over 20 lakh vehicles in a calendar year for the first time in its history. This accomplishment also made Maruti Suzuki the first among Suzuki Motor Corporation’s global automobile manufacturing facilities to reach this landmark, as per a company statement in a statement in December, 2024.

Out of the 20 lakh vehicles produced in 2024, nearly 60% were manufactured at the plants in Haryana, while the remaining 40% came from its Gujarat facility, the company had said.

Moreover, the 2 millionth vehicle produced was an Ertiga, which rolled out from the company’s Manesar-based manufacturing facility in Haryana.The company is also planning to establish a new greenfield facility with an annual production capacity of 10 lakh units and is in the process of selecting an appropriate location for the project.
