Marvel’s Ill-Fated Blade Reboot Timeline Revealed, Would’ve Been the Earliest of Any MCU Movie

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Blade 4 continues to be little more than a concept as the long-gestating sequel remains in limbo. Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter offers new intel into what the ill-fated Blade reboot was going to look like, confirming it had a vintage setting similar to her latest feature-length project, Sinners.

Speaking on the John Campea Show, Carter, known for her award-winning work in the Black Panther film series, was the costume designer for the in-development Blade 4 after Marvel announced it in 2019. Carter confirmed reports that the Blade remake was set in the 1920s, sticking to its comic book roots, as half-man, half-vampire Eric Brooks was born during London’s Great Depression in 1929. “I was prepping Blade for Marvel, and it was a 1920s Blade story,” Carter said. However, when the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike compromised Blade 4‘s production, she found herself “in limbo,” becoming one of several names to exit the project.

Hannah John-Kamen debuted as Ava Starr/Ghost in the MCU’s Antman and the Wasp, and in Thunderbolts*, she will get to show the world her heroic turn.

Had the Blade reboot been set in the 1920s, that would have made it one of the earliest set films in the MCU timeline, preceding the 1960s futuristic film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the 1940s-set Captain America: The First Avenger and Agent Carter. There’s also Eternals, which was originally set in 5000 B.C. but mostly took place in the present day. Insider reports claimed Blade 4 would start in the 1920s before continuing across multiple time frames.

Carter is one of several associated with Sinners to speak out about Blade 4‘s struggle to get off the ground. Delroy Lindo, who was originally cast in Blade 4, was among many to depart the reboot last year alongside Aaron Pierre and director Yann Demange, the second helmer to leave the project. Lindo recently revealed he was set to play a “Marcus Garvey-esque” community figure in Blade 4 before things “went off the rails,” leading to his exit. Meanwhile, Sinners lead actor and MCU star Michael B. Jordan expressed his hope the Blade reboot’s fortunes change. Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali and horror film star Mia Goth are the only names attached to Blade 4, which doesn’t have a release date.

The MCU has introduced some truly powerful, reality-altering characters during its multi-decade run.

With Blade 4 off the table, Carter leaned about another period film featuring vampires in Sinners, directed by Black Panther franchise helmer Ryan Coogler. After Coogler explained his concept for the movie, set in Mississippi during the 1930s, Carter boarded the Warner Bros. thriller. “Having done a lot of research for this period piece about a vampire — Blade is a vampire story,” Carter said. “Ryan’s wife, Zinzi, who also was a producer on [Sinners], she gave me a call and said, ‘Ryan has a story he’s going to tell you about … It is a period piece about vampires.’ And I thought, ‘Okay, I have already been living in that space for quite a long time prepping Blade, and Blade‘s not going to happen, so let me hear it.’” She added, “I couldn’t believe he was not only doing a period piece, but he was doing a vampire film. If I were to guess what his next film after Black Panther [Wakanda Forever] would have been, I don’t know if I would have gone into that space.”
