Born in 1969 into a Tamil family as Madhoobala Raghunath Malini, Madhoo Shah is a well-known Indian actress who has worked across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema. She made her Bollywood debut in 1991 alongside Ajay Devgn in Phool Aur Kaante, an action-romance drama that went on to become a blockbuster. A year later, Madhu rose to fame with the Tamil romantic thriller Roja, starring Arvind Swamy in the lead role.

Over the years, Madhoo became a household face who is still remembered by many, especially those who grew up in the 90s. However, many people are unaware that she belongs to a film family, as veteran actress Hema Malini is her cousin and her father was a producer. In an interview, the actress recounted that she underwent many challenges despite hailing from a film background.

While speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Madhoo shared, “My father was a producer. I am from Hema Malini’s family, she is my cousin. My mother was a dancer. My whole background was around dance, music, and films. But whatever I did, I did it myself. First of all, it was a struggle that I had to tell my father that I want to become an actor. Because he wanted me to become a doctor. Second, I did not have support and I did not have confidence. I felt that if I told people that I wanted to become an actor, people would laugh. I had to get out of self-doubt. I did not even know how to approach someone for work. All this was a big struggle for me. First of all, I got rejection.”

Madhoo also recalled the time when she got replaced in her first film without being informed. “My father was a producer, so he had a film Awaargi, which had Anil Kapoor, Govinda, and Meenakshi. I had gone for the song recording of that film. When a producer saw me there, he told my father that he wanted to cast me in a film. But my father got angry about it. But then I told my father to say yes. Then he got me trained. But when the film started, after four days only, he felt that I was not ready and I was replaced.” she said.

The actress discovered about her replacement in the film through a magazine. The 16-year-old Madhoo was devasted after reading the news. But she didn’t let the setback affect her, and she came back strong, becoming one of the most successful actresses in the 90s.

After a building an illustrious career in Indian cinema, she met her husband Anand Shah during a photoshoot in 1999. The latter is the cousin of Juhi Chawla’s husband Jay Mehta. Madhoo also has two daughters by the names Amaya and Keia.
