Megan Rapinoe on the growth of women’s sports

On the most recent episode of BFFR with Sydney Leroux and Ali Riley, Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird of the podcast A Touch More joined the hosts to discuss the rise of women’s sports.

“To be honest it’s so emotional and so amazing,” Rapinoe explained. “And there’s also a part of me that’s like ‘I’m so mad.’ It’s jealousy which is a normal emotion but I just would have loved to be in this era. It’s just incredible.”

Rapinoe and Bird were both in attendance at the WNBA All Star weekend in Indianapolis last month, the third straight year the event was sold out.

“I was just thinking after we got back here with the [WNBA] All Star game and the [Women’s] Euros are going on,” Rapinoe went on, “and it’s incredible and just every time any women’s sports event happens it breaks every record. And it’s like we did it, we took it, we won it. Now we’re in the era where it’s just like going to get what it deserves in terms of funding, and investment and all the money necessary.”

“It’s so incredible and it makes me feel so proud,” Sue Bird added. “Of course I would love to be playing in it. It’s so great to still be a part of it in ways and get to experience it in ways. And ultimately, it’s a big fat ‘I told you so.’ And that’s the best part.”

“It’s just really, honestly, validating,” Rapinoe said. “Validating is one word for it; I’m really petty so I’m just like ‘we told you so!’”
