Meghalaya CM meets Amit Shah in New Delhi

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday and discussed various important issues related to the overall development of the state.
During the meeting, Sangma discussed the long-pending issue of the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
He also demanded to bifurcate the joint cadre system of IAS, IPS and IFS officers of Assam and Meghalaya.
“I had a meeting with the Union Home Minister on Thursday and we discussed numerous issues regarding Meghalaya. I conveyed to him on the need to bifurcate the joint cadre system of IAS, IPS and IFS officers of Assam and Meghalaya,” Sangma said, arguing that Meghalaya is the only State in the country that have a joint cadre system of IAS, IPS and IFS officers with another State.
“No other state in the country has got a joint cadre. Therefore, I have requested and urged the Home Minister that if the cadres of Assam and Meghalaya could also be segregated and then we could get dedicated officials, it would be a benefit to Meghalaya,” the Chief Minister said. Sangma said that he reminded the Home Minister on the need to implement the British-era Inner Line Permit (ILP), an official travel document that allows an Indian citizen into a protected area for a limited period, keeping in view of the security situation in neighbouring Bangladesh.
“Keeping all these factors in mind, it was important to normally strengthen the presence of our forces along the border, creation of more infrastructure and at the same time, having a mechanism to check illegal immigration in Meghalaya. Given the current circumstances and the current laws that are there in the country. The only option that we have is to go for an ILP and based on that we have once again urged the Home Minister to consider that,” the Chief Minister informed.
In 2019, the Meghalaya Assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Union government to include Meghalaya under the purview of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 and implement ILP.
Several pressure groups have time and again been demanding the Central government to implement the ILP system to check the unbated influx of illegal immigrants in the State.
The Chief Minister also reminded Shah for the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. “We had passed a resolution in the Meghalaya assembly to include Garo and Khasi languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. At multiple times we have also submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister urging him to consider inclusion of Garo and Khasi language in the Eight Schedule,” Sangma said.
Sangma also requested the Home Minister to name a road after his late father, P.A. Sangma, a former Meghalaya Chief Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker and MP, in New Delhi.
“Late P.A. Sangma was a national figure who has always raised his voice for the Northeast, for the tribals and for the minorities, and the tall-figure in the northeast and in Meghalaya as well as in the country at large. Therefore, it will be truly befitting to have a road in the capital named after late PA Sangma,” he said.
