Mel Gibson recalls time spent filming Braveheart in Trim

All LMFM News

As Braveheart’s director, Mel Gibson (seen here with Cabrina Conaty) made sure a red nose was worn in every scene

The movie’s director says its success couldn’t have been achieved “anywhere else” – despite it being set in Scotland.

Mel Gibson’s been recalling the time he spent filming Oscar-winning movie Braveheart in Meath.

The actor – who directed, produced and starred in the 1995 film – posed for selfies in Trim yesterday, where events have been taking place to mark the 30th anniversary of the movie’s release.

He says its success couldn’t have been achieved “anywhere else” – despite it being set in Scotland.

Speaking to LMFM’s Cabrina Conaty at the King John Summer Prom festival, the 69 year old spoke about choosing Trim Castle as one of the film locations:

Well, it was the ruin, you know.  And because we had to build York, and where it was already kind of standing…now at that time, it probably wouldn’t have been stone. But, you do what you do to make something cinematically compelling.

And they put a lot of woodwork on it to make it look like…it gave it a flavour of the old motte/bailey style edifice that they used to construct, you know.”

Mel Gibson also explained why chose to also film in Ireland as well as Scotland:

“It was a beautiful place to shoot. And we captured it pretty well on film. So there was no doubt about where you were.

But, we found that for some of the bigger pitched-battle scenes, and some of the studio work, that it was more advantageous to do it here.

Because the ground is more horse friendly. There’s more horses. There’s more people. The Minister of Arts and Culture at the time, Michael D (now President Higgins), gave us the big open arms and said, Come on in.”

And you can hear more of that interview on the 11 to 1 Show tomorrow.
