Mendon football wins home opener in Week 3 vs. Concord

MENDON ― The Mendon Hornets knew Week 3 would not be an easy one. The Hornets, tied for first place in the inaugural Michigan Sports Writers Division 2 8-player football poll, were coming off a close win at Britton Deerfield last week.

On Friday, the Hornets were playing host to Concord, ranked inside the Top 10 in Division 1, and it was the home opener. Possible distractions were known by the Hornet coaching staff, but the green and white wanted to play their style of football and take care of business.

Everything mostly went according to plan for the Hornets, who moved to 3-0 on the season with a 56-26 win.

“I told the kids I thought we did a good job sticking together when it was close at 14-14. That didn’t really phase us. Last week, I thought we got flustered at times in that game, so this week we stayed the course and followed the plan,” Mendon coach Bobby Kretschman said.

Mendon loves to run the football. That’s not a surprise to anyone on the team’s schedule. But even though Concord did its best to stop the Hornets’ ground game, they still rolled up 328 yards on 37 carries.

Owen Gorham led the way with 160 yards on nine carries, Xavior Zinsmaster ran for 76 while JT Lux added 54 and Ryder Gorham ran for 48.

“This was a good football game for us because we’re going to learn from it. We’re the point in the year, this was our third regular season game, where we are a third of the way through the regular season,” Kretschman said. “Are we where we want to be moving forward? I saw some good things tonight, but also some areas where we want to improve moving forward.”

Lux scored on runs of two and six yards in the first quarter.

In the second, Owen Gorham scored on runs of 45 and 1 yard. Ryder Gorham ran for a 6-yard TD. Lux also scored on a 1-yard plunge while Brayden Crites caught a 28-yard TD.

Mendon led 50-14 at the break.

In the third, Mendon’s touchdown was scored by Owen Gorham, his third, on a 38-yard run.

“Biggest thing I saw tonight is we stayed together, we won at home,” Kretschman said. “But we’re still going to be working on things at 3-0. That’s good.”

Zak Iobe led the defense with seven tackles. Ryder Gorham had five tackles while Zinsmaster, Carter Huston and Pheonix Dunson each had three stops. Jayden Haigh recovered a fumble.
