Mercedes-Benz predicts “flat” sales-growth in India this fiscal
Brendon Sissing, Vice-President (sales and marketing), Mercedes-Benz India
Predicting a “flat” growth in sale of luxury cars in India this financial year, Mercedes-Benz India on Wednesday said that given the “uncertainties” in the market and “indecisiveness’ among customers, it would have done a good job, if it could “hold on” to the sales clocked last year.
“Given a lot of macro-factors including GST (Goods and Services Tax), we are expecting a flat growth this year,” said Brendon Sissing, Vice-President (sales and marketing), Mercedes-Benz India, during his visit to Ahmedabad. “These incidents have had an influence on customer indecisiveness and therefore if we are able to hold on to the performance last year, then we have done a good job,” he added. The company, which has been witnessing double-digit growth since the last two-three years, had sold 19,565 units in India during the 2024-25 fiscal.
It is expecting a flat growth this year despite clocking a 10 per cent growth in sales in the first quarter of FY26. Sissing said car sales this year for the company will come from the top established markets including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, which account for 75 per cent of the total sales in India. The company is present in more than 50 cities in India.
“Last year, we had launched 14 vehicles. Today marks the eighth launch this year. All of them are top-end cars,” said Sissing, who was in Ahmedabad to launch the AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe priced at ₹1.3 crore (ex-showroom). In order to push sales, Mercedes-Benz India is launching a first-of-its-kind on-ground event, Dream Days Festival, which will start from October. The event is scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad on November 1-2, where the entire range of Mercedes-Benz cars across sedans, SUVs, BEVs, AMGs and the iconic G will be kept on display.
Surge in BEV sales
Talking about the profile of its customers in India, Sissing said the buyers of Mercedes-Benz cars are in the age-group of 35-40 years and consist of professionals working for MNCs, start-up founders, doctors, lawyers and chartered accountants. The company has been seeing a “surge” in the number of customers opting for its Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). Last year, BEVs accounted for 4-5 per cent of the total sales. During the first quarter this year, the sales of BEVs have risen to 8 per cent.
Mercedes-Benz, which began operations in India in 1994, sold 50,000 cars till 2013. It sold an additional 1.5 lakh cars between 2014 and 2024. The company produces luxury cars for the domestic market at its manufacturing facility at Chakan near Pune.
