Mercedes-Benz, marked a significant milestone on Tuesday with the roll-out of its 200,000th locally produced vehicle from its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. The landmark car, an EQS SUV, was rolled out by Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, responsible for Production, Quality and Supply Chain Management.
This milestone reflects the company’s accelerated growth in the Indian market. While it took Mercedes-Benz India 19 years (1995–2014) to produce the first 50,000 cars, it has manufactured 150,000 units in the last decade (2015–2025), including a record 50,000 vehicles in just the past two years.
The Chakan facility has been central to several notable achievements, including becoming the first location outside Germany to produce the Mercedes-Maybach S500 in 2015. The plant also led the transition to luxury electric mobility in India with the local production of the EQS 580 Sedan in 2022. Mercedes-Benz further became the first automaker to localize a second battery electric vehicle (BEV) in India by producing the EQS 580 SUV.
sustainable manufacturing
Since 2022, the production facility has operated on 100 per cent green energy, underlining the company’s focus on sustainable manufacturing. Mercedes-Benz India now offers a portfolio of 11 locally produced luxury models, the widest range of ‘Made in India’ luxury vehicles. The company has invested ₹3,000 crore in the country, including a fresh infusion of ₹200 crore in 2024, making it the highest investment by any luxury automotive manufacturer in India.
“Mercedes-Benz’s remarkable milestone of 200,000 ‘Made in India’ Mercedes-Benz cars, underlines India’s potential as a key manufacturing hub in the long run. The Indian plant has achieved high level of production agility, manufacturing world-class ICE and EVs under one-roof, underscoring the technical prowess of the team and high level of flexible manufacturing, capable of responding fast to market and customer requirements,” said Burzer.
Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said, “ Mercedes-Benz production facility is the backbone of our Indian operations and has played a critical role in our market success, manufacturing world-class ICE and BEV products for the discerning Indian customers. Mercedes-Benz continues to set new standards in production quality, remaining invested in the market with highest investment by any luxury OEM in India.
