Here’s a clip for you to check out from the upcoming Cinderella-inspired horror movie titled The Ugly Stepsister, which is “a daring and unexpected take on the world-famous tale, seen through the eyes of the Cinderella’s stepsister, Elvira.”
This movie is going to be filled with pain, blood, and twisted body horror. This clip teases “barbaric beauty procedures that the title character undergoes in the name of love.”
Here’s the synopsis: “A sinister twist on the classic Cinderella story, The Ugly Stepsister follows Elvira (Lea Myren) as she prepares to earn the prince’s affection at any cost. In a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira will compete with the beautiful and enchanting Agnes (Thea Sofie Loch Næss) to become the belle of the ball.”
The film is directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, who previously explained: “The gory film follows Elvira as she battles to compete with her insanely beautiful stepsister in a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business. She will go to any lengths to catch the prince’s eye.”
She added: “It’s time the ugly stepsister’s story is lifted from the shadows of Cinderella, and cultivated as the iconic feminist narrative of the tyranny of beauty that it is.
“With this ‘beauty horror’ I want to seduce the audience into a ‘girl-dreaming-of-marrying-the-prince-fairytale,’ before revealing its true and raw insides.”
In Corrin’s review of the film, she said: “There are some truly terrifying and gross moments in this movie that draw attention to the lengths at which humans have gone to throughout time to make themselves hotter.
“Definitely unsubtle in its criticism, there are plenty of shocking moments that will leave you feeling nauseated. In fact, we were told at the beginning of the screening that an audience member did in fact puke during the premiere of this movie, which is the first time I’ve ever heard of that happening at Sundance.”
