Meta Appoints ChatGPT Co-Creator Shengjia Zhao as Chief Scientist at Meta Superintelligence Lab

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces Zhao’s appointment as a strategic move to steer the company’s advanced AI research through its Llama models and beyond.

New Delhi– In a major development in the global AI landscape, Meta has appointed renowned AI researcher Shengjia Zhao as Chief Scientist at its newly formed Meta Superintelligence Lab (MSL). Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the announcement via a thread post on Friday, calling Zhao’s addition a “new paradigm shift” in Meta’s AI ambitions.

Shengjia Zhao, widely known as a co-creator of ChatGPT, GPT-4, GPT-4.1, and other foundational AI models, brings deep expertise in large-scale machine learning. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University and a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University.

Zhao previously led several breakthrough initiatives at OpenAI, including the development of core generative AI systems that have reshaped natural language processing. At Meta, Zhao will now set the scientific direction and research agenda for MSL, working under the broader vision laid out by Alexandr Wang, who plays a guiding role in Meta’s superintelligence strategy.

“I’m excited to share that Shengjia Zhao will now be the Chief Scientist at Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). His work marks a new era in AI development,” Zuckerberg wrote.

Meta’s Superintelligence Lab was recently launched to unify and accelerate its work on Llama models—Meta’s family of open-source large language models developed to rival closed systems like ChatGPT and Claude.

With Zhao’s induction, Meta now has two Chief AI Scientists:

  • Shengjia Zhao (Meta Superintelligence Lab)
  • Yann LeCun (Meta’s FAIR Lab – Fundamental AI Research)

While LeCun leads Meta’s theoretical AI innovations, Zhao is expected to drive the scaling, application, and advanced systems development side of Meta’s AI ecosystem, particularly around AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and LLMs (Large Language Models).

This appointment signals Meta’s strategic push to become a dominant player in next-gen AI, directly competing with OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
