Mia Sara Looks Back on Filming ‘Ferris Bueller’ Parade

It’s been nearly 40 years since Mia Sara first made an impression on moviegoers in the seminal 1986 classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” an experience that Sara recalls fondly — particularly filming that iconic parade sequence. In the scene, Matthew Broderick (aka “Bueller…”) leads an impromptu, elaborate, rag tag dance troop through the streets of Chicago, set to The Beatles’ “Twist and Shout.”

“We would do the dance and then we’d get in a van and they’d drive us blocks away,” Sara told People. And the camera would go, and then we’d do the dance again and wait for Matthew to pass. It was just this crazy ‘let’s catch it as many times as we can.’ So that was a great moment.”

Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan first appeared together in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger."

Sara hasn’t rewatched “Ferris Bueller” in a while because, she said, “It’s not really fun to watch yourself.” She also doesn’t get very many chances to catch up with her co-stars, which included Jennifer Grey, Alan Ruck, and Charlie Sheen, though they did have a cast reunion on Zoom in 2020. She has, however, made sure that her children watch the movie.

“My kids have absolutely seen it,” Sara said. “I think when they were younger, it was just embarrassing. My kids, because they grew up in Hollywood — they grew up in Los Angeles — they had a lot of friends whose parents were actors who were still really working all the time, and so they were kind of bummed that I stopped working.”

Sara is back in the spotlight again, though, in Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck,” in which she plays the grandmother of the title character.

“I couldn’t believe when Mike [Flanagan] told me that… Mark Hamill was going to play the grandpa,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it. I get to be married to Luke Skywalker. It’s the greatest thing.”

Sara told IndieWire that Flanagan wanted to make the movie as a gift for his children.

“Mike is a wonderful father, and I have kids, and we talked about that and what we want the world to be like for our kids. Then when he sent [the script] to me, I couldn’t stop crying and I called him through tears and said, ‘Are you kidding? You really want me to do this? Yes, of course. Absolutely,’” she said.
