The 2012 found footage film, Chronicle has found itself a new streaming home.

Jordan as the popular Steve Montgomery in a performance that showed the actor’s potential in the superhero genre. Additionally, the film featured performances from lead Dane DeHaan as bullying victim Andrew Detmer and Alex Russel as Andrews’ cousin Matt Garrett. Chronicle premiered in theaters on February 3rd, 2012, and was a box-office hit, earning $126.6 million worldwide on a $15 million budget. Michael B. Jordan has impressed the masses with incredible performances in hit films such as Black Panther, Creed, and Fruitvale Station.

Chronicle follows the story of three seniors in high school who bond when they gain telekinetic power after exploring an underground cave. The story is told through Andrew’s video diary, which he uses to record his life. Chronicle is as much a coming-of-age film as it is a superhero film, as Andrew struggles with insecurity, bullying, abuse at the hands of his alcoholic father, and his mother’s battle with cancer. The film differentiates itself from other superhero movies through its atypical plot that follows a more grounded storyline as opposed to the more flashy plots that the genre is known for.

Will Chronicle Ever Recieve a Sequel?

Despite Chronicle’s box office and critical success, many fans are okay with the idea of the film never receiving a sequel. However, in 2021, producer John Davis spoke about a potential sequel film featuring an all-female cast. Davis says, “We’re working on Chronicle 2 right now, and I think it’s going to be great. We’re working on it at Fox.” He continued, “It’s going to give us a chance to tell the story in a different way. We’re going to tell it from the female point of view.”

Hollywood Wasn’t Ready for What Chronicle Had To Offer

Chronicle is unlike any superhero movie ever made. Yet, somehow, the film is rarely talked about in the mainstream because of Marvel and DC.

Regarding the plot, Davis described the concept as such: “It will have been ten years since the event happened in Seattle, and a lot of it’s going to deal with fake news and real news and cover-ups. More interestingly, it’s the next generation getting these powers that are corruptive. These are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey. I mean, what a new and interesting story you can tell there. These are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey. I mean, what a new and interesting story you can tell there.”

Unfortunately, for the future of Chronicle 2, there have been no updates on this project since. Additionally, other attempted sequels before Disney purchased Fox all failed. The status of Chronical 2 is currently up in the air.

Chronicle and its director’s cut will be available to stream on Max May 1st.
