Microsoft has confirmed another wave of layoffs, cutting 300 jobs in Washington just weeks after laying off 6,000 workers globally. Most affected were software engineers and product managers, while fewer than 17 percent were managers. The company cited organisational changes to adapt to evolving AI and market demands.

Microsoft Lays Off 305 Employees in Washington Amid Organisational Restructuring.

New Delhi: Microsoft has announced that it will be laying off 305 of its employees in Washington. This decision was made only a short time after Microsoft announced in May that it would lay off more than 6,000 employees worldwide. Although Microsoft did not mention any other staff reductions outside of Washington, it said the new cuts are just a fraction of its overall workforce of 228,000 people.

Bloomberg reported, the company explained that these job cuts are part of steps needed to help the company perform well in a changing market. In this round, the employees mostly affected were not part of management. More than 80 percent of the layoffs affected software engineers and product managers, with a small number impacting senior management.

Second major round in less than a month

The company has announced another significant round of layoffs this year. In the middle of May, the company reduced its global staff by 3 percent, meaning it laid off more than 6,000 employees. Nearly 2,000 of the agencies were headquartered in Washington. With the latest job cuts, Microsoft has dismissed close to 2,300 workers in Washington this year.

Layoffs linked to restructuring, not performance

In the beginning of this year, Microsoft dismissed some employees as part of a performance review. The company explained that the layoffs in May and June were not about individual employees but a restructuring of the organisation. Employees were upset by the January layoffs because they lost their access to company systems and were not offered severance or healthcare benefits.

The recent layoffs indicate that Big Tech firms are changing their staff to meet new challenges and changes in AI and the market. Like Microsoft, Google, Meta and Amazon have laid off thousands of employees this year as well.
