Migrants Sent €7.7 Billion in a Decade, Reduced Poverty by 8%
Over the past decade, migrants have sent €7.7 billion to Albania—an amount equal to the state budget for an entire year. According to the latest data from the Central Bank, around 30% of Albanian households remain highly dependent on these transfers, as migrants send about €90 million each month through official channels.
“The results show that remittances represent an important source of household income, although less than one-third of families have benefited from them,” the Central Bank’s latest study states.
Furthermore, estimates indicate that remittances help reduce the percentage of the population living below the poverty line, meaning that money sent by migrants has improved the economic well-being of Albanian households.
The Bank estimates that without this source of funds, poverty in Albania would be at least 8% higher than it is today, reaching 28%.
