MLAs push for Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Ranikor road project; CM assures World Bank-funded inclusion
Shillong, Aug 6: Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein, accompanied by Kitborlang Nongrem, Chairman of Sur Paidbah, South West Khasi Hills District, called on Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday to push for the construction of a Standard Intermediate Lane on the Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Khatphra (Ranikor) road.
The MLAs submitted a petition urging the state government to expedite the sanctioning process of the road project, citing its strategic and economic significance. The proposal was earlier submitted via a letter dated July 2, 2024, addressed to the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of PWD (Roads).
“We are happy to inform you,” said MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar while briefing the press after the meeting, “that under the leadership of Bah Kitborlang Nongrem, the Chairman of Sur Paidbah, and as MLAs of the district, we have received good news from the Hon’ble Chief Minister. The road proposal is very much in place and has been prioritised for construction under the World Bank. This is great news for the people of South West Khasi Hills.”
He added that the 50-kilometre stretch from Weiloi to Keniong will be taken up in the first phase and will greatly benefit the entire district.

“As of now, we have a better road from Ladmawreng to Weiloi compared to previous years, but now we will be getting an intermediate lane of the same standard from Weiloi to Mawkyrwat up to Keniong,” Tongkhar said.
He also raised the need for three more important road projects to improve connectivity between West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills.
“I proposed a road from Rangdkhew to Marngor, another from Jashiar–Shngimawlein–Sohma–Rangeiksheh to Kynshi, and one more from Pyndendiwah–Laitnongrim–Pihnongbah to Shyrwang. These roads will be vital for inter-district connectivity and especially beneficial for farmers in transporting their produce,” he said.
When asked about the budget allocation, Tongkhar replied, “Of course, it’s still in the preparation stage, but we understand the estimate is around ₹200 crore for the Weiloi to Keniong road. The exact amount may vary slightly, but that’s the ballpark figure.”
Asked how many areas the road would benefit, he said, “This 50-kilometre road will benefit the entire district of South West Khasi Hills. Though we have a decent road up to Weiloi, from Weiloi to Mawkyrwat—the district headquarters—the condition is still poor. This project will be a game-changer.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein said, “Today we are so happy to have met our Chief Minister. He has assured us that this long-awaited road connecting Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Keniong will be taken up in the first phase. He also promised that once this is completed, the second phase will connect Ranikor and eventually extend to Baghmara. This will link South West Khasi Hills with South Garo Hills as well.”
