As the world marks World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, young South Africans are increasingly relying on mobile technology not just for communication but as a vital tool for education, career growth, and access to information.

For many learners, smartphones have become indispensable. “It helped me a lot because we research some of the stuff that we’re getting at school and learn other things,” one student said. Another added, “I can’t function without my phone. It’s my source of reaching out and communicating. I don’t think I’d be able to go without it.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) is also making its way into classrooms, assisting students with research, essay structuring, and complex subjects like accounting. “AI helped me a lot because I usually search for formulas, financial statements, and even business studies essay structures,” a learner explained. However, students emphasize the importance of verifying information. “I try to Google a bit more, see more information, and then make it into my own words,” one said.

Teachers are also exploring AI’s potential in education. While concerns exist about misuse—such as students relying on AI to complete assignments—educators see benefits in using the technology for creating case studies and enhancing learning scenarios. “There is a good side that I think all teachers need to start using in some form or another,” an educator noted.

Despite these advancements, digital inequality remains a challenge in South Africa. To bridge the gap, the Eastern Cape Department of Education has begun rolling out digital learning initiatives, including tablets and smart classroom equipment in public schools.

As mobile technology and AI continue to reshape education, ensuring equitable access remains crucial for empowering the next generation of South African learners.
