Modern Family Star Joins Major Superhero Franchise’s Next Movie

Modern Family star Ariel Winter has booked perhaps her most high-profile role yet since the hit ABC sitcom ended in 2020. The actor is set to join the fan-favorite superhero franchise The Thundermans.

According to Deadline, Nickelodeon has greenlit a new movie in The Thundermans franchise, Clash of the Thundermans, which will be set after the events of The Thundermans Return and The Thundermans: Undercover. Winter will play Cognita in the superhero movie, appearing alongside returning cast members Kira Kosarin as Phoebe Thunderman, Jack Griffo as Max Thunderman, Maya Le Clark as Chloe Thunderman, Addison Riecke as Nora Thunderman, Diego Velasquez as Billy Thunderman, Chris Tallman as Hank Thunderman, and Rosa Blasi as Barb Thunderman.

Modern Family Gets Caught Up In Coldplay Concert’s Kiss Cam Meme

Some people think a Modern Family scene predicted an event that millions have made memes about – the Coldplay affair couple.

“In Clash of the Thundermans, when Chloe develops a destructive new superpower, the Hero League orders her to an elite boarding school for superheroes to learn control of her abilities. Faced with the prospect of sending Chloe away for years, the Thundermans split apart, with Phoebe, Barb and Billy taking her into hiding. Max, Hank, and Nora track their rogue family members, until the two factions face off against each other in a full-on battle for the Thundermans’ future,” reads the logline for the movie. Production began today, July 31, in Vancouver, Canada.

Nickelodeon’s The Thundermans franchise is arguably more popular than it was during its initial run on the kids’ channel. The original series ran for four seasons and 98 episodes on Nickelodeon from 2013 to 2018. Following a six-year hiatus, the franchise returned with the feature-length continuation, The Thundermans Return, which was a ratings success, ranking as the No. entertainment telecast for the year to date in Live+3 across all cable among Kids 6-11. This high viewership prompted Nickelodeon to a order a spinoff sequel series, The Thundermans: Undercover, which premiered in January 2025.

What Has Ariel Winter Done Since Modern Family Ended?

After wrapping up an 11-season run as Alex Dunphy on Modern Family in 2020, Winter hasn’t found herself part of any major projects. She was a contestant on the short-lived Fox reality series Stars on Mars in 2023 and voiced a recurring character in Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ final two seasons. However, she is set to reprise her voice role as Sofia in Sofia the First: Royal Magic, an upcoming spinoff that is part of Disney’s hit children’s franchise Sofia the First. The series will premiere on Disney Jr. in 2026.

As for whether fans could see her stepping back into the shoes of Alex Dunphy for a Modern Family revival, nothing is currently in the works. However, several of Winter’s former co-stars have expressed interest in such a project, with Sarah Hyland, who portrayed Alex’s older sister Haley, noting in June 2024 that she “would love to be back with everybody” but “would want to see a script first.”

Clash of the Thundermans will premiere day and date on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ in 2026.
