Modi inaugurates ₹8071-crore projects in Mizoram, adds Aizawl to India’s railway map
Aizawl: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mizoram on Saturday to inaugurate infrastructure projects worth ₹8071 crore, marking a landmark moment in the state’s connectivity and development journey. Chief among them was the official launch of the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, which places Aizawl, the state capital, firmly on India’s railway map.
The Prime Minister also flagged off three new train services: the Aizawl–Delhi Rajdhani Express (via Anand Vihar Terminal), the Aizawl–Kolkata Express, and the Aizawl–Guwahati Express. He recalled laying the foundation stone of the Bairabi–Sairang line in November 2014 and said the project’s completion, despite immense geographical challenges, reflects the “spirit of transformation and connectivity.”
Alongside the railway line, the Prime Minister inaugurated projects across multiple sectors, including education, roads, sports, and energy. These include two residential schools worth ₹57 crore, the ₹500 crore Aizawl Western Side Bypass Road, a ₹226 crore gas bottling plant at Mualkhang, major bridges and road links, and a sports hall in Aizawl.
Speaking via videoconference from Lengpui Airport due to poor weather, Modi said September 13, 2025, was a “historic day” for Mizoram and the Northeast. He emphasised that the new railway link is not just a transport project but one that will “revolutionize lives and livelihoods” by boosting markets for farmers, opening up job opportunities in tourism and hospitality, and improving access to healthcare and education.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Mizoram’s role in India’s Act East Policy, citing connectivity projects like the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the upcoming Sairang–Hmawngbuchhuah railway line to the Bay of Bengal. He praised Mizoram’s cultural and historical legacy, sports achievements, and growing startup ecosystem, while announcing further investments in youth development and tourism.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw called the railway line an “extraordinary engineering feat,” passing through 45 tunnels and over 55 major bridges, including one taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar. Cargo operations and refrigerated coaches will begin soon, enabling Mizoram’s produce like ginger, turmeric, and fruits to reach wider markets.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma hailed the day as “defining” for the state, noting that the Prime Minister’s initiatives will integrate Mizoram more closely with the rest of India and unlock new opportunities for growth and development.
