Mohanlal-Prithviraj film fails to impress in Hindi, Tamil or Telugu; Kannada version yet to touch Rs 1 crore

Empuraan box office collection day 7: Despite the controversies and mixed reviews, Mohanlal-starrer Empuraan has been powering its way through the Malayalam box office, earning big numbers. But the Malayalam film, which was also released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, has not been able to repeat the success in these languages. Let’s take a breakdown of Empuraan earnings in non-Malayalam languages.

Empuraan BO collections in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada

Empuraan, the third directorial of Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran, was released in theatres on March 27, 2025, to mixed reviews. Even as controversies raged, the Malayalam version of the film made a strong impression at the box office, earning Rs 76.58 crore in seven days at the ticket window, as per industry tracker Sacnilk.

None of the other dubbed versions come close to the Malayalam version, resolutely remaining in single digits while the Kannada version failed to even hit the Rs 1-crore mark.

The Tamil version of the Lucifer sequel is in the second place, but with just Rs 2.64 crore in net collections.

The Telugu Net Box Office collection of Empuraan for 7 days stands at Rs 2.34 crore. The Hindi collection follows with Rs 1.98 crore. However, L2: Empuraan Kannada Day Wise Net Collection is right at the bottom of the table with Rs 0.19 crore, as per figures on the Sacnilk website.

The Empuraan team, led by Prithviraj Sukumaran, had gone all out promoting the second installment of the popular Lucifer trilogy.

During the promotions in other states, Prithviraj had insisted that Tamil/Telugu speakers should watch the dubbed version in these languages rather than the original Malayalam. He cited the tedious process undertaken to ensure that the dubbed versions also stand good. However, the box office numbers from non-Malayalam regions indicate that these efforts have failed to impress the audiences in other states.

On the other hand, Empuraan worldwide collection stands at an impressive Rs 122 crore, across languages. The India gross collection is at Rs 92 crore, while the overseas collection is Rs 30 crore
