Morgan, Carpenter to Call Saturday’s Football Game
As the 2025 Gopher football season continues this week and flocks of Maroon and Gold fans return to Huntington Bank Stadium for a matchup against Northwestern State, a pair of former Minnesota student athletes will also make their return to campus, but this time representing the Big Ten Network.
Former Minnesota standouts Tanner Morgan and Emma Carpenter will partner with play-by-play announcer Jason Ross Jr., to broadcast the Minnesota versus Northwestern State game at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 on BTN.
Morgan played quarterback for the Gophers from 2017-22. After redshirting in his true freshman season, Morgan would go on to have a storied career at Minnesota where he still ranks first in school history in games won as a starting quarterback (33), career pass efficiency rating (151.0), and career completion percentage (62.2).
“I would say all around my time at the ‘U’ was elite,” said Morgan. “I got six great years of learning and developing – not only as a better football player – but as a better man and I continue to use the lessons and principles I learned as a student athlete.”
The former football signal-caller is set to make a return to his old stomping grounds this weekend as the Gophers take on the Northwestern State Demons, but this time as a broadcast analyst for the Big Ten. He will partner with play-by-play announcer Jason Ross Jr., in the booth to call the action.
“I’m really excited to be able to represent the Big Ten, and as a former student athlete at the ‘U’, this being my first game is really exciting,” he said.
Carpenter is also set to make her return to campus on Saturday, as she will report from the sideline for BTN when the Gophers battle the Demons.
Carpenter competed in 39 tournaments for the Gp[hers from 2019-24 and recorded a career best seventh-place finish as a senior at the Westbrook Invitational during her senior season.
While building a decorated athletic career, Carpenter was also busy working for Gopher Digital Production (GDP) and she received the 2023 Lisa Byington Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding female broadcaster in the Big Ten Network’s StudentU program. She credits her experience working with Gopher Digital Productions for preparing her for her next step in her career.
“My time with Gopher Digital Productions and getting to cover nearly every sport on Big Ten+ really prepared me for this role I’m stepping into,” said Carpenter. “Stepping onto the sidelines at Huntington Bank Stadium on Saturday, I feel prepared from my GDP experience. It really taught me how to tell stories, how to think on my feet, and how to respect every athlete’s journey.”
Now returning to her alma mater, Carpenter appreciates how her life as a student-athlete and her life as a broadcast reporter have really intertwined with each other.
“I will always be grateful for the support and opportunities that the University of Minnesota has given me,” she said. “For my first ever live network football game coverage to be at Minnesota, it is really a full circle moment.”
