Morocco’s potato exports rise after five-year decline

Potato exports from Morocco, which had been decreasing since 2019, have started to recover, according to EastFruit analysts. Between July 2024 and May 2025, the country exported 42,900 metric tons of ware potatoes, valued at US$14.9 million. This volume is 5.7 times higher than in the entire previous marketing year (MY) and 1.5 times greater than in MY 2022/23.

Morocco’s highest potato export volume was recorded in MY 2018/19, with nearly 100,000 metric tons shipped to international markets. Since then, annual export volumes declined almost every year, reaching a low of 7,400 metric tons in MY 2023/24. This drop pushed Morocco from 28th place in the global potato exporter rankings in 2019 to 67th in 2023. The current MY marks the first increase in exports following five consecutive years of decline.

Moroccan potato exports follow a seasonal pattern. Peak shipments typically occur from July to September, with additional increases between February and April. However, from March 2023 to February 2024, a ban on potato exports to West Africa resulted in minimal international trade until the measure was replaced by a quota system. During MY 2023/24, most exports were directed to European markets.

In the current MY, West African destinations, including Mauritania and Mali, have re-emerged as the main markets, together accounting for nearly half of total export volume. Spain remains an important buyer, with volumes continuing to increase. Exports to France, Portugal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal have also grown. In contrast, shipments to the Netherlands, Burkina Faso, and Niger have decreased.
