The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green Business Certification Institute Pvt Ltd (GBCI) with the goal of promoting sustainability built-environment through the efficient use of energy, water, waste, and advanced technology for monitoring and expanding the number of LEED certified garment factories in India.

Gopalakrishnan P, Managing Director of GBCI Asia Pacific and Middle East, and Mithileshwar Thakur, Secretary General of AEPC, signed this MOU.

The Indian garment sector is more dedicated than ever to promoting sustainable practices, said Sudhir Sekhri, Chairman of AEPC, who emphasised the significance of the Memorandum of Understanding. The factory’s enhanced air quality, decreased carbon footprint, and decreased resource use are all indicated by the LEED certification. It also raises the value of the property, decreases running costs, and boosts investor trust.

Secretary General AEPC Mithileshwar Thakur said that, compared to Bangladesh, which has about 250 LEED-certified clothing companies, India only has 13. A building’s adherence to green building principles that promote energy efficiency, resource conservation, and better indoor environments is shown by its LEED certification, a worldwide recognised rating system for assessing a building’s environmental performance and sustainability.

Regional green building and business project teams receive on-the-ground customer support from GBCI India, according to Gopalakrishnan P, Managing Director–GBCI Asia Pacific and Middle East. GBCI is in a position to provide full-service onsite certification and verification for the company’s sustainability initiatives thanks to this operational hub.

Cooperation with GBCI will focus on knowledge sharing and information exchange, boosting research and publishing, including technical guides, and raising awareness.
