Students at Mt. Carmel Academy Charter School traveled the world in a single day as they celebrated their annual United Nations Day on Friday, an event dedicated to promoting cultural awareness, unity and peace through education and community participation.
From Egypt to Cuba to Australia, the charter school’s center courtyard transformed into mini embassies as students dressed in traditional attire, shared cultural facts and sampled foods from around the world.
Assistant Principal for Elementary, Maria Mesa told the Guam Daily Post the event helps students understand the importance of global awareness from an early age.
“It’s to basically give them awareness of what’s happening all over the world and, of course, its rich history; when the United Nations was formed and the purpose,” Mesa said. “Every year, as they move from Pre-K to eighth grade, they learn about multiple countries and take that knowledge with them until high school. The kids really enjoy it, especially with the food tasting.”
Second grader William Davis, who represented Egypt, proudly shared what he learned about his assigned country moments before he took to the stage, “They have good food,” he said with a grin, adding that his favorite was baklava.
He also recited a short speech about Egypt’s role as an active member of the United Nations and how the organization promotes peace and development worldwide.
“It was a little hard to memorize, but it was fun,” he said.
Parents also joined the celebration, filling the campus with excitement and pride. Nicole, a mother of two students representing Australia and Cuba, who only wanted to be identified by first name said she appreciates how the event promotes peace and understanding.
“Despite what’s happening in the world, this shows that we should stay in peace instead of violence,” she said. “It warms my heart to see the kids learning about new cultures and having fun.”
Mesa said the strong turnout reflected the school’s family-oriented culture rooted in CHamoru values, martial arts and community. “We wouldn’t be able to do this without the parents’ support,” she said. “Our motto is to educate the complete child, and that includes celebrating diversity and unity.”
Through music, costumes and cuisine, Mt. Carmel’s United Nations Day offered a vibrant lesson in global citizenship, reminding students, families and educators alike that the world’s differences can be celebrated as a source of connection rather than division.
