Music Depot accepting orchestra, band instruments for Greeley music programs – Greeley Tribune
Bringing Music to Life invites the community to support Greeley schools by donating gently used orchestra and band instruments for its 15th annual instrument drive.
Music Depot will accept donated instruments until March 29 at 2318 W. 17th St. in Greeley.
Colorado music teachers face annual budget decreases and rising costs for supplies and instruments, posing a problem in engaging students in music programs, according to a Bringing Music to Life news release. These issues mean many students have to share instruments, creating roadblocks to practicing outside of school hours.
Families also struggle to pay for instruments, which range from $500 for a clarinet to more than $3,500 for a tuba, Bringing Music to Life said. Even monthly rental fees — between $20 to $80 — are out of reach for many across the state.
This results in students missing out on experiencing “the joy and educational benefits of music,” according to the release.
Steve Blatt, a former classical music program host on Colorado Public Radio, wanted to address these challenges with an instrument donation drive in 2009. The one-time drive sparked the creation of the nonprofit Bringing Music to Life.
Every year since, Bringing Music to Life has hosted two-week donation drives across the state, asking people to drop off their instruments at music store locations, the release said. All instruments get refurbished and then donated to school music programs.
Bringing Music to Life matches the donated instruments to wishlists submitted by Colorado schools, according to the release. Music teachers then have their wishes come true at an instrument distribution day in the summer.
Last year, Greeley-Evans District 6 music programs at Bella Romero Academy, Brentwood Middle School and Harold S. Winograd K-8 School received refurbished instruments.

Since 2009, more than 8,700 refurbished instruments have been donated to 330 Colorado schools, benefiting an estimated 20,000 students as they get passed on to multiple students throughout the years, according to Bringing Music to Life.
Schools that want to receive instruments for the 2025-26 school year must complete the online application by March 31. Staff members can apply at bringingmusictolife.org/school-applications.
Bringing Music to Life also collects financial contributions to cover the cost of repairs. Community members can give to the repair fund at bringingmusictolife.org/repair-fund.
Music teachers have applauded Bringing Music to Life for helping them grow their music programs and introducing students to the “wonders of an instrument.”
