When a singer makes a comeback, with a romantic song that too, there is hope that music is alive, love is alive and that there always are takers for love songs. Sreekanth Sasikanth, a musician and television personality, who took a break from the spotlight to the rigours of a corporate job, is back with ‘Kadhal Vaaney’, a delightfully refreshing Tamil single.
Composed by Nidhin Joe Jacob, the song is breezy, yet tugs at the heartstrings. Sreekanth, who is back after a seven-year hiatus, says he decided to return to music full time because with each passing day, he had begun to miss singing a little more. And when the right song presented itself, he did not hesitate. He said ‘yes’ and ‘Kadhal Vaaney’ was born. When Nidhin, who is also a friend of Sreekanth’s, sent him a scratch of the song, he knew he had to do it. “It is an R&B number, something people who are familiar with my singing may not associate me with, and that is why I wanted to do it,” says Sreekanth. Having collaborated with Nidhin earlier for a song, it was an effortless exchange of ideas. From rehearsals to recording, it was a smooth ride, says Sreekanth.

Penned by Karuna Saran, the song was recorded at R72 Studios in Coimbatore earlier this year. “SreRam Anand, the founder of the studio, helped me perfect my Tamil diction,” says Sreekanth. The song was mixed and mastered by Ashbin Paulson and it has Muhammed Huzzain on the guitar. “As a musician, it is satisfying to make a comeback with an original track,” says Sreekanth.
Having been away from the music scene for seven years, much has changed, he observes. “From the way music is made to the way it is experienced has undergone a shift. But it offers better possibilities for artistes like me. The independent music scene is vibrant now and there is a lot to experiment with.”
Sreekanth, who has trained in Carnatic music, entered the music scene as a contestant in popular singing competitions on TV. He went on to anchor popular live musical shows on Kairali TV. For over 10 years, Sreekanth was a familiar presence in television. He earned an acting break, too, in Balachandra Menon’s film Njan Samvidhanam Cheyyum (2015), through his mentor and music director Sunny Viswanath. “Acting was a great learning experience,” Sreekanth says.
He believes every musician has a space. “And I am happy to have found mine.”
‘Kadhal Vaaney’ is currently available on all streaming platforms.
