Mutually Human acquires software engineering firm SpinDance
Grand Rapids-based software engineering company Mutually Human has acquired a similar local firm to help grow its capabilities in embedded and Internet of Things software.
The deal for Holland-based SpinDance Labs Inc. marks Mutually Human’s third acquisition in the last two years. The deal aligns with the company’s “aggressive” acquisition plan to bolster capabilities in a growing technology industry, according to executives.
Last week’s announcement of the merger came three years after Mutually Human initially connected with SpinDance about a potential deal. Now, the companies will operate under the Mutually Human brand to offer comprehensive digital solutions, Mutually Human President Jason Kuipers told Crain’s Grand Rapids Business.
“(SpinDance) is a phenomenal company with a great reputation,” Kuipers said. “Their capabilities in the IoT (internet of things) and embedded technology space is something that we’re happy to add to our own and aligns right in with the digital engineering work we do for our clients.”
SpinDance operated as a digital engineering company for the last 24 years, building end-to-end digital products including artificial intelligence, data and software developments, according to their website. The company served more than 80 clients across sectors including nonprofit, industrial and health care.

With the acquisition of SpinDance, Mutually Human aims to expand its capabilities in two key software areas: embedded software, which is written to control machines or devices, and IoT software, which allows devices to communicate and exchange data over the internet.
“For over two decades, SpinDance has been helping businesses solve critical challenges through software development,” SpinDance CEO Kim Burmeister said in a statement on the deal. “By merging with Mutually Human, we can leverage our shared strengths to better serve our clients and continue driving innovation through meaningful digital solutions.”
Mutually Human has served clients as a digital engineering firm for 17 years. Its current focus is to prepare customers “for the AI-powered world of tomorrow” with data engineering and management, automation and custom software-enforced power: generative AI, large machine learning models or applications, Kuipers said.
Compared to previous acquisitions, SpinDance was a merger “equal in size” to Mutually Human. Kuipers noted SpinDance’s tenure in West Michigan and long-term employees support Mutually Human’s goals in the digital engineering space.
All SpinDance employees will stay on with Mutually Human following the acquisition and two SpinDance senior executives will join the company’s leadership team. Kuipers declined to disclose the total number of employees transitioning under the acquisition.
Mutually Human’s parent company Century Technology Group advised on the deal. Additional terms of the detail were not disclosed.
The digital engineering industry is slated for growth. The industry, which was estimated at $810 billion in 2022, is expected to reach nearly $1.6 trillion by 2026, according to a study conducted by Zinnov Management Consulting.
Mirroring the growth of the industry, Mutually Human hopes to expand organically with sales and marketing efforts and more acquisitions that leverage capital and compress time frames.
The SpinDance acquisition marks Mutually Human’s second merger for 2024. In March, the company acquired Grand Rapids-based VanData Consulting LLC, a data engineering and analytics firm with a focus on intelligent automation and artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Previously, Mirrorlytics LLC, another Grand Rapids data and business analytics firm, merged under Mutually Human in 2022.
