Bridge Music Academy (BMA) conducted a teacher Workshop on October 25 at the Bridge Music Academy, Purana Bazaar, Dimapur. The workshop was conducted by renowned musician and Educator and Founder & Director of Bridge Music Academy, head of Music Education & Pedagogy at Spardha School of Music and Brand Ambassador for Roland, Ritesh Khokhar.
The workshop was specifically designed to equip local music educators with modern skill and insights, aiming to elevate the standard of music education in the region.
The Key areas that workshop covered included Pedagogy: Effective teaching methods, Music Exam: Guidance on preparing students for certified music examinations and teaching online: Techniques and tools for successful virtual instruction.
Speaking at the workshop, Ritesh Khokhar emphasized the importance of treating music teaching as a structured and accountable profession. He noted that, like other professional fields, music teaching required formal training, professional conduct, and consistent standards.
He highlighted that educator often tried to cover too many areas in one session, which led to reduced retention and learning outcomes. Hence, he advised that sessions should be kept simple, focused, and targeted toward grassroots-level teaching.
He explained that teaching was more than just giving lessons and that teachers were responsible for making sure students actually learned and highlighted the need for clear goals and visible progress in every class. He categorized teachers into three groups namely, reactive, proactive, and reflective and explained that reactive teachers responded to classroom situations without planning, proactive teachers planned lessons in advance and prepared alternatives and reflective teachers reviewed their classes afterward to improve their future teaching practices. The reflective model of teaching was particularly encouraged, as it involved self-assessment and continuous professional growth.
He explained the importance of professionalism in every aspect of teaching. Punctuality, regularity, and preparedness were described as indicators of professionalism. He pointed out that teachers needed to manage time effectively, plan lessons according to available duration, and ensure that students received clear instructions for independent practice between classes.
He explained that learning goals should be clear, specific, and measurable, following the SWBAT (Students Will Be Able To) objectives. He highlighted that teacher should first assess what students already know, then set realistic and achievable goals based on that. He also noted that teachers should regularly check students’ progress to ensure they are meeting these goals and adjust lessons if necessary.
He highlighted the importance of assigning homework that aligns with clearly defined learning objectives, emphasizing that assignments should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, following the SMART framework, emphasizing that tasks must be designed so that students can accomplish them within the given timeframe and monitor their own progress.
He highlighted the growing role of online teaching and digital tools, emphasizing the importance of mastering technology to effectively reach students remotely. He noted that proper camera setup, lighting, and software management are essential for a professional teaching experience in a virtual environment.
He concluded that teachers must combine structured lesson planning, relevant and achievable assignments, consistent student engagement, and professional use of technology to ensure productive and effective learning outcomes.
