KUCHING (March 16): The measurement of Sarawak’s poverty levels ought to be reviewed again to ensure that there is greater accuracy in reflecting the true socioeconomic realities of the people, said Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.
The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said the present data under the National Poverty Data Bank System or eKasih may not necessarily reflect the latest status of individuals registered under the system.
“In the past, there may have been a rush to register for eKasih as it provides the people many benefits from the government. But there are individuals who may no longer be considered poor but are still registered under the system.
“That is what we don’t want because it gives an inaccurate picture of our people, not only in Sarawak but throughout Malaysia,” she told reporters when met after officiating the ‘Juh Shopping Raya’ programme organised by the Association of Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders of Malaysia (Pekema) Sarawak at Mydin Vista Tunku here today.
Recently, Tourism Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah had also reiterated the need for the poverty rate measurement to be restructured.
He said the eKasih data has its limitations and therefore the government should reassess the approach based on that data.
Nancy commended Sarawak for taking the initiative to conduct its own review, which she says is necessary to ensure that only those who are eligible can receive the government’s assistance.
“This is indeed a good and noble effort for the people of Sarawak as the Sarawak government has provided many benefits for its people.”
She said the government is always trying its best to improve the livelihood of the people.
“We can see the efforts of both the federal and state government. Our Prime Minister has stated that the goal is to achieve zero hardcore poverty.
“However, in order to achieve this, it requires strong and continuous efforts from the government and it is an ongoing process.
“That is why we hope that this matter can be addressed as soon as possible,” she said.
On the ‘Juh Shopping Raya’ programme, Nancy said this initiative has been carried out for the past four years in collaboration with Pekema.
“We have 150 recipients today who will each receive RM200 cash voucher to enable them to purchase some items for their Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration in efforts to help reduce the burden of the less fortunate,” she said.
Also present was Pekema Sarawak president Dato Ismail Abang Saufi.
