Nashville’s Music City Loop project sparks concern over environmental challenges
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — FOX 17 News is taking a closer look at the plan to build an underground tunnel connecting Nashville’s airport to downtown — and one big question is whether the terrain could cause problems.
A geology professor FOX 17 News spoke with said the tunnel by Elon Musk’s Boring Company comes with flooding risks. She also warns it could mean less water in places like the Cumberland River.
The project — called the Music City Loop — would connect the State Capitol in downtown Nashville to Nashville International Airport in as little as eight minutes.
The privately funded project is getting support from the Music City Center.
Charles Stark, CEO of the Music City Center, told FOX 17 News, “From a marketing and customer perspective, it would be crazy to have it within 15 feet of us and not take advantage of it.”
But not everyone is on board. Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell still has questions.
“I think that’s one of the questions we’ve got, is this a net positive overall?” he asked.
One concern from community members stands out: how will the tunnel affect what’s going on underground?
We asked Dr. Kallina Dunkle, a geology professor at Austin Peay State University.
“The water is really, I think, the biggest concern. When we drill down, eventually we hit a point where there’s water filling in all those open spaces — and that’s a lot shallower in this area of the country,” said Dr. Dunkle.
She said that’s what could cause flooding.
“If you’re planning on having cars driving on it, that’s going to be a problem if there’s literally water covering the whole tunnel roadway.”
Dr. Dunkle adds that the Boring Company would have to pump that water out, but removing too much could dry up water on the surface.
“It’s just going to be more of a challenge,” she said.
Other questions remain, like whether the tunnel could cause damage above ground or raise concerns about property rights.
We reached out to the Boring Company for answers and are still waiting to hear back.
