Nathan Jones reveals Charlton Athletic team news v Millwall

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has provided a squad update ahead of his side’s home clash against Millwall.

The Addicks have started their return to the Championship in mixed fashion, after achieving promotion from League One via the play-offs last term.

A late winner courtesy of new man Harvey Knibbs gave Charlton the perfect start against Watford, however they then recorded just one point in the following three matches.

An Abdul Fatawu wonder strike denied them a draw versus Leicester City, but perhaps the most concerning outing was a 3-1 defeat at the hands of QPR, who have also struggled for form during the early stages of the season.

This puts extra onus on the Addicks to secure a decent result during their London derby against Millwall.

The clash will be the highest attended fixture between the two sides for more than 50 years, which highlights just how important the game will feel.

Ahead of the contest, Jones has issued a positive injury update which will no doubt boost the Charlton Athletic faithful’s hopes going into the fixture.

Perhaps an explanation for Charlton’s wavering form before the international break can be their injury woes.

Defender Reece Burke moved to the Addicks from Luton Town in the summer, but has been sidelined so far this term, an issue that plagued his time with the Hatters.

Charlie Kelman was arguably Charlton’s premier signing of the transfer window, joining from fellow Championship outfit QPR in a deal that could rise to £5 million.

The 23-year-old scored 27 goals in all competitions for Leyton Orient last season but has struggled for match sharpness during his time at the Valley.

Playing 61 times throughout the 2024/25 campaign could be an explanation for this, but Jones has now updated the Charlton supporters on what Kelman’s situation now looks like.

When commenting on squad availability in his pre-match press conference to Charlton’s club media channels, the Addicks’ boss said: “We’ve used the two weeks to get a bit of minutes into a few people, to rest up one or two, and then there’s been one or two away. We’ve got a huge game on the weekend which we’re looking forward to.

“Reece Burke has had minutes, so has James Bree who’s had more work into his legs. Then [Charlie] Kelman and [Tanto] Olaofe have needed that time and they’ve done that, so they’re all up to speed with greater oomph if you like.”

After arriving at the Valley for such a hefty fee, Charlton supporters will naturally expect Kelman to be scoring goals on a regular basis, much like he did last season with Leyton Orient.

However, the 23-year-old hasn’t managed to net in four second-tier appearances for his new club, but this could be put down to his sub-par fitness.

If the striker has used the international break as a period of rest and recovery, he may be able to operate at the levels he has shown he is capable of in the past.

This will be a massive bonus for the Addicks, who may be about to see the best of the forward they have invested large amounts into.
