The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Sunday launched the second phase of its “mist sprayer project” along Shanti Path and Africa Avenue roads to help curb rising air pollution in the national capital.
After the successful first phase at Lodhi Road, the civic body embarked on the second stage to manage the deteriorating air quality in the national capital, including Lutyens Delhi.
Kuljeet Singh Chahal, NDMC Chairperson, said as Delhi’s air quality continues to remain in the “very poor” category, the civic body has intensified its efforts for dust suppression, smog reduction, greenery enhancement, and public awareness.

To curb local dust pollution, the NDMC has installed mist sprayers on electric poles. These devices release fine droplets of treated water that help settle suspended dust particles, offering short-term relief from pollution.
On Sunday, as part of the second phase, the civic body installed five nozzles each on 30 poles along an 850-metre stretch of Africa Avenue, and on 32 poles over a 900-metre stretch of Shanti Path. Each pole uses around 84 litres of treated water per hour, supported by storage tanks.
Chahal said the third phase of the project would cover 24 major roads in the NDMC area for Rs 15 crore, while the fourth phase will extend to Connaught Place and Khan Market. “Team NDMC is committed to the prime minister’s vision of a clean and green India and to ensuring a healthier environment for citizens,” he said.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) on Sunday at 12 pm was 321, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category, according to government data published on the Sameer App from all 39 pollution monitoring stations in the city. This was higher than Friday’s 275 and Saturday’s 292, both of which fell under the ‘poor’ category. The app warns that prolonged exposure to such air quality can lead to serious respiratory illnesses.
