NE Railway conducts cleanliness drive to mark World Environment Day 2025
Guwahati: In line with its continued efforts toward environmental sustainability, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is observing World Environment Day 2025 through a comprehensive Cleanliness Drive from May 25 to 27.
The initiative is focused on promoting sustainable practices, reducing plastic pollution, and enhancing community involvement across railway premises.
The drive includes targeted waste management efforts across NFR stations. Waste segregation bins have been installed on platforms, supported by awareness campaigns aimed at educating passengers on their proper use. Cleanliness activities are being conducted at railway stations and surrounding areas with the involvement of local communities and NGOs, encouraging collective participation in keeping the environment clean.
To address the issue of plastic waste, IRCTC is spearheading a campaign to promote eco-friendly, biodegradable cutlery, replacing single-use plastics. Additional waste bins are being deployed to strengthen waste sorting infrastructure. Passengers are being urged to actively participate in the segregation of waste, while railway staff are undergoing training sessions on managing organic waste and minimizing plastic usage.
As part of the broader observance, NFR launched multiple initiatives across its divisions. The campaign was inaugurated at the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Office in Tinsukia with a pledge ceremony, followed by a walkathon advocating against single-use plastic. At New Alipurduar station, awareness drives were conducted on May 24 and 25, focusing on plastic waste management and the effective use of segregation bins. In Alipurduar Railway Colonies, a door-to-door campaign was undertaken to inform residents about the environmental hazards of plastic and promote sustainable lifestyle choices.
Meanwhile, the World Environment Day 2025 campaign kicked off at Dibrugarh Workshop (DBWS) on May 22 with a series of awareness drives held through May 24. These sessions educated staff on the dangers of single-use plastics and encouraged the adoption of sustainable alternatives. Adding a cultural touch to the campaign, Nukkad Nataks (street plays) were organized by the Divisional Railway Hospital at Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, highlighting key messages on waste reduction and segregation.
The awareness activities were further bolstered by demonstrations, pledge ceremonies, workshops, and the display of posters and banners at major stations, ensuring the campaign reached a wide audience.
