Nearly 38,000 overseas tourists claim free transport tickets to Macau in May
The Macau SAR government’s “Free Direct Bus and Ferry Ticket” promotion has drawn nearly 38,000 international visitors in May, with tourism officials calling the initiative effective in boosting arrivals.
Launched to attract travelers transiting through Hong Kong, the program offers free bus tickets from Hong Kong Airport to Macau and discounted one-way ferry tickets for international tourists already in Hong Kong. The promotion runs until December 2025.
According to Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), over 7,700 passengers used the free bus tickets in the first month, costing the government more than 2 million patacas. The top five markets were Singapore, South Korea, India, Japan, and the Philippines. An additional 30,000 visitors claimed the ferry ticket discount.
“The results have been positive, reinforcing integrated tourism between Hong Kong and Macau,” Senna Fernandes said as quoted by public broadcaster TDM.
August is typically Macau’s peak tourist season, and authorities expect 2025 to follow the trend, aided by summer themed events and industry promotions. The MGTO will also launch a roadshow in Thailand next week and expand family-friendly and study tour offerings in collaboration with industry partners.
