Nelly Furtado is entering a new chapter in her life.
On Instagram, the “Promiscuous” singer announced that she’ll be stepping back from performing music to pursue other opportunities.
She shared the news by posting a throwback photo of herself 25 years ago, when her first album, “Whoa, Nelly!” was released, as well as a recent video of herself in Berlin waving goodbye to her fans from the stage.
“I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life,” she wrote. “I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career.”
“I’ll identify as a songwriter forever. I’m grateful for all the years of fun, community and wonder,” she added.
Furtado concluded her post by thanking “anyone who has ever listened and vibrated with my music and attended any of my shows.”
“I love you and your open hearts,” she said.
Throughout her career, Furtado has released seven studio albums and has seen three of her hit songs top the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
She released her seventh album, “7,” in September 2024. She previously told TODAY.com that album was different because “I love myself more and I’m more confident.”
“I’ve learned so much and I have boundaries,” Furtado said. “I used to try all my ideas — I have always co-produced all my albums — but this time was different. It was, like, complete freedom, complete liberation in (the studio) — just trying anything I wanted.”
In January, the “Say It Right” singer talked about the pressures she’s faced in the music industry regarding her appearance.
On Instagram, she said, “This year I became aware of the aesthetic pressure of my work in a brand new way, while simultaneously I experienced new levels of self-love and genuine confidence from within.
“For whoever cares, I have never had any face or body surgeries or augmentation, besides for veneers on the top row of my teeth, quite recently,” she said while sharing some more beauty secrets like drinking water.
“My New Year’s message for 2025, is express yourself freely, celebrate your individuality and know that it’s perfectly OK to be OK with what you see in the mirror,” she said. “And it’s also OK to want something different. We are all cute little humans just bouncing around the earth looking for hugs.”
