Nestlé secures minority stakes in Indian pet food company Drools – Brand Wagon News
In a significant development for India’s fast-growing pet care sector, Nestlé S.A., the global food and beverage giant and parent company of Nestlé India, has acquired a minority stake in Drools Pet Food Private Limited, marking its entry into the Indian pet food market. Despite the investment, Drools will continue to operate independently, maintaining its strategic and operational autonomy.
The move comes months after private equity major L Catterton invested in Drools in June 2023, also for a minority share. Both developments underscore growing investor confidence in the Indian pet care space, which is witnessing rapid expansion as pet ownership soars.
Founded in 2010, Drools is India’s first home-grown pet food company and has since emerged as a major player in the segment. The company now sells its products through over 40,000 retail outlets across India and exports to 22 international markets. It recently joined the ranks of India’s unicorns, a rare achievement for a company in the pet care category.
“This is a testament to the love and trust of millions of pet parents and to our unwavering commitment to quality,” said Fahim Sultan, Founder of Drools. “Backed by science-based nutrition, we aim to lead innovation in pet food and better serve the evolving needs of Indian pet parents.”
Drools operates six manufacturing facilities, a 16-lakh sq. ft. warehousing network, and employs over 3,400 staff, including 1,800 sales professionals. Its portfolio of more than 650 SKUs includes high-protein diets, veterinary-prescribed food, and value-for-money offerings that cater to a wide range of pet nutrition needs. It is also a major player in the growing cat food market and ranks among the top sellers on platforms like Amazon.
Speaking on the development, Anjana Sasidharan, Partner and Head of India at L Catterton, said, “Drools has seen remarkable growth since our investment, driven by strong execution and a commitment to quality. We are delighted to welcome Nestlé—one of the world’s most respected names in pet care and consumer goods—as a partner in this journey.”
