This past summer, Christopher Nolan broke his personal box-office records with the fantasy epic The Odyssey. The movie grossed nearly $1.8 billion worldwide and received excellent reviews. It’s now considered a favorite in multiple Oscars categories. Nolan is coming off his first-ever Best Picture and Best Director wins at the Academy Awards, for the biographical thriller Oppenheimer. Released in 2023, Oppenheimer exceeded all expectations to gross nearly $1 billion worldwide. It also fell just $100 million short of becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing hit. Before The Odyssey, this title was held by The Dark Knight Rises, which is currently streaming in the United Kingdom on Netflix, but only for a little while longer.

The movie was released in 2012 and serves as the final installment of Nolan’s critically acclaimed The Dark Knight Trilogy. While the film opened to excellent reviews at the time, the response has mellowed over time. That said, the movie is still remembered for Tom Hardy’s iconic performance as the villainous Bane. With returning star Christian Bale in the lead role, the film also featured Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Marion Cotillard, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

It now holds a “Certified Fresh” 87% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “The Dark Knight Rises is an ambitious, thoughtful, and potent action film that concludes Christopher Nolan’s franchise in spectacular fashion.” Produced on a reported budget of $250 million, the film grossed $1.08 billion worldwide, narrowly surpassing The Dark Knight’s global haul of $1.05 billion. Nolan’s trilogy inspired several other studio tentpoles to take a grounded approach to their storytelling, with films such as Snow White and the Huntsman, Man of Steel, and Godzilla following not long afterward. You can watch The Dark Knight Rises on Netflix in the UK until November 7, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
