A new romantic comedy-drama, My Oxford Year, has arrived to Netflix.
The Netflix film is available on the streaming site on Friday, August 1. My Oxford Year is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Julia Whelan. The film follows Anna, an ambitious American student, who fulfils her childhood dream of studying at Oxford University. During her time there, she meets a charming poetry professor Jamie and the relationship they forge changes both of their lives.
Allison Burnett and Melissa Osborne penned the script while Iain Morris directed the film. My Oxford Year has Descendants’ Sofia Carson and Queen Charlotte’s Corey Mylchreest starring respectively as Anna and Jamie. Sofia, who recently starred in another Netflix romcom, is also an executive producer of the film.

On the Netflix’s Tudum site, Sofia had commended the director Iain. Iain created and wrote the hit British sitcom The Inbetweeners.
“Iain Morris created one of the most iconic pieces of British television, The Inbetweeners,” the 32-year-old actress said. “Comedy is his language. It was so important for Marty [Bowen – producer] to bring in Iain as our director, because he was so certain of the importance of comedy to the DNA of this film. You simply cannot have a British romance without iconic British humor.”
“Iain’s vision of this film brought to life a sweeping, heartbreaking romance that is simultaneously grounded in laughter. In one scene, you can fall in love, have your heart broken, cry, and laugh — all in the same breath,” Sofia continued. “Laughter is always present, delicately woven throughout the film, because laughter is so often how we as humans cope with darkness, how we shed light onto the darkness.”

She also gushed about Corey, calling him an “extraordinary force of an actor.”
“When it came time to cast Jamie, I knew it would be Corey. As soon as he walked into the room for our read in London, Anna and Jamie came to life instantly.” Sofia added.
Some viewers seemed to have also felt the romance was heartbreaking as they took to X formerly Twitter to share their emotions. One user said, “when you realize the romcom you were watching is actually not a romcom” Another said, “Why did no one warn me that My Year in Oxford was a tearjerker?”
My Oxford Year was published in 2018 and it was Julia’s debut novel. The author is also known for acting. She was first introduced in 1998 TV movie Fifteen and Pregnant and had a main role in TV series Once and Again from 1999 to 2002.
Her last physical acting credit was a 2017 short film Ghosts of New York and an episode of NCIS in the same year.
My Oxford Year is streaming now on Netflix.
