Netflix’s ‘vulgar’ film from creator of your favourite childhood cartoons with Wednesday star

It’s very different from his shows you watched growing up with some unrecognisable stars

Netflix’s new ‘vulgar’ film comes from the creator of your favourite childhood cartoons and features unrecognisable Wednesday star.

Available exclusively on the streaming platform from today (August 13), Fixed boasts an all-star cast, but fans may struggle to identify the famous faces due to their transformed appearances.

This is because the latest release is an animated film, unlike anything you’ve likely seen before, with a host of familiar voices for viewers to enjoy.

The art style will resonate with those who grew up watching Cartoon Network, as the film is the brainchild of visionary writer and director Genndy Tartakovsky.

Regarded by many as a legend in the animation industry, Tartakovsky is also the creator of childhood favourites such as Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack and more adult oriented Primal, reports the Mirror.

He has also written for The Powerpuff Girls and Star Wars: Clone Wars series and is the driving force behind all the Hotel Transylvania films, even lending his voice to the character Blobby since the third instalment in 2018.

Fixed tells the tale of Bull, an average, good-natured dog who discovers he’s going to be neutered in the morning. As the reality of this life-changing event sinks in, Bull decides he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends, given these are the final 24 hours with his balls. What could possibly go wrong?

The impressive voice cast is led by Pitch Perfect and The Righteous Gemstones star Adam Devine, who voices Bull. He is joined by Idris Elba, voicing Rocco, and Agatha All Along actress Kathryn Hahn as Honey.

Saturday Night Live veteran Bobby Moynihan voices Lucky whilst Fred Armisen, known for portraying Uncle Fester in Netflix’s Wednesday series, takes on the role of Fetch. For those still wondering who that is, he’s the spectacle-wearing canine.

The film has endured a lengthy journey to reach audiences. Warner Bros initially axed it as part of cost-cutting initiatives and Netflix declined it in 2024. Twelve months on and it’s now available for streaming.

When questioned about what would have happened if the movie had never seen the light of day, star Devine quipped: “I would burn Hollywood to the ground. I would have retired, I would have moved back to Omaha, Nebraska and become a real estate agent. That was my back-up plan, but I do think I would have been a great real estate agent.”

Now the picture has finally arrived, critics are beginning to share their verdicts online. Whilst initial responses were largely favourable, professional reviews have proved predominantly lukewarm.

Currently, it maintains a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s acclaim for the vocal performances and animation approach but many are ultimately deterred by the film’s explicit content.

One reviewer stated: “Fitfully funny and laudable for its veneration of classic animation styles. But Genndy Tartakovsky’s latest film mostly corners the market (and marks the corner) on every obvious punchline about neutered dogs and too rarely reaches for laughs beyond them.”

Another viewer commented: “What is the Purpose of this film? Sure it has a funny concept… but after the first 20 minutes it gets old sadly… I just wanted more from this. Surely an Homage to old school animation but its missing the charm.”

However, there are those who advocate giving it a watch, if only to confirm its existence. One review read: “What Tartakovsky delivers with the shackles off is enough of a reason to support this absurdly vulgar animated film. Netflix has saved a movie that needs to be seen to be believed.”

Another individual remarked: “It’s clear that Fixed is, very much, a movie that is not for everyone. But those who do get on its particular wavelength will be rewarded by one of the most original and surprising animated features of the past few years.”
