New dementia cafe to open at The Village Green in Thornaby

Organiser Jo Bennett, from the Alzheimer’s Society, already runs a Singing for the Brain group and another dementia café in Darlington, as well as another singing group in Middlesbrough. She is passionate about the therapeutic value of music for both people living with dementia and their loved ones.

Jo said: “Music is so beneficial for people with dementia as it can improve mood, help to reduce anxiety, and improve memory. The brain is so complex and we now know that singing and dancing activates neural pathways that are involved in memory and language processing. That’s why musical activities help people to bring back memories from their younger days – which helps them stay connected with loved ones.”
